Saturday was spent exploring the southern end of the island, much of which is covered by an unusual geographic formation--the Stora Alvaret. It's a stark landscape and difficult to photograph well, but here's a link to Oland.com's attempt. At this time of year, Dad thought it was somewhat reminiscent of the high desert of Southern California after a good spring rain, with the wildflowers blooming.
Dad and the Bean found time in their travels to take a break, while Mom examined the local pottery:

At Kappelludden on the (extremely windy) Baltic Coast, Dad briefly explored the ruins:

Back in town for dinner, the Bean decided she was tired of the stroller, and was much happier in the Baby Bjorn:
On Sunday the Bean (again enjoying the Baby Bjorn) explored the Borgholms Slott, a castle ruin overlooking the town of Borgholm where the Bean is staying.
Oddly, one of the castle's rooms features a modern art installation:
Later, the Bean ventured to the extreme northern end of the island, to explore the Troll Forest (Trollskogen). The forest is made up principally of pine trees, and the aroma on a warm sunny day was intense and wonderful. The Bean watched very intently, but didn't see any trolls.
On their final evening in Borgholm, Mom, Dad and the Bean stopped by the water's edge to enjoy the evening light (and, for once, an almost complete absence of wind). Sunday was Mother's Day in Sweden (Glad Morsdag, Mama!) The other local mothers were keeping a close eye on their little ones down by the water:
Mom was too, and the Bean couldn't have been happier.
